It all started with a hi on Orkut
In an attempt to catch up with an old family friend
Deepening the bond with a set of scraps
Soon enough, there was just one filling up that scrapbook
Giving us a feeling of virtual chemistry
Then Facebook came along, in all it's splendour
Young collegians took to it like a duck does to water
Pictures, status messages, likes and comments were all in vogue
This new medium looked like it would never grow old
The daily likes, comments and chats went on every night
This was quite a different way of burning the midnight oil
As time went by, cell phones gave way to smartphones
What's App, Viber and Hike came along
More of virtual hugs, kisses and I love you's
Giving a heightened sense of excitement
So one day I finally made the trip
Trying to recreate this virtual world for real
And boy, was I in for a surprise
There was nothing being said and suddenly nothing to say
The love I imagined in the virtual cocoon
Was in reality oh, so far away
So on we went back to our day jobs in different cities
Still, for some odd reason trying to recreate the virtual chemistry
What's App and Viber remained active
But nothing translated into a real connection
So I tried to take the bull by the horns
Asked her, what really is wrong
Why, when we were so close in the virtual world
Did we shy away like newbies in person
We tried giving it time
And things in the Net Space began to heat up
Arguments became the norm and words were never forgotten
The virtual cocoon was also just an exaggerated illusion
So here we stand, ten years later
Familiar strangers, with no bones left to pick
Was it love, or just that strange illusion
That a sense of confidence in a protected world throws up
Only time will tell, but believe me my friends
We are none the wiser for being a smartphone generation
And love is well, oh so fleeting an emotion.
